Lately, it becomes more and more interesting to monitor such cutting-edge technology like facial recognition. It has been more than 10 years since Njemanze offered software that can recognize human faces, and now its possibilities are quite promising.

Moreover, we all understand that this is an ongoing development, which is far from its end.

What are the benefits of Facial Recognition in the modern world and what’s AI’s part in this? Well, let’s take a close look and analyze all the key moments and recent events.

What Is The FR Mechanism And What Is AI’s Part In This?

Largely, a branch of artificial intelligence known as computer vision has done FR mechanism. It works on a base of findings from the psychology of face perception to inform software design and make some conclusion.

It works through measuring nodal points, the distances between certain points on the face. In order to make so-called faceprint, it is necessary to identify approximately 80 of them. The paramount breakthrough is that your faceprint is a unique code that is applicable to you and can be scanned at a distance.

Once it is made, it is run through identity databases to connect the face to a name. The probability of errors is more than minimum; only eight out of 1000 scans can be mistakenly identified. For this reason, FR has excellent prospects for performing important functions without failures.

Even now, we all know how well facial recognition is for unlocking phones and tagging our friends on Facebook. Talking about more substantial things, this technology became a significant part of ongoing progress for the most developed countries. And it’s really interesting how they use it.

China Aims To Be The Leader In Facial Recognition

China is vigorously using facial recognition cameras and aims to have the largest number of them. By the way, they are doing well with this. Today they have more than 170 million CCTV, which are closed-circuit television cameras, with another 400 million predicted in the next few years.

What is the operation of such cameras? Rather useful and far-reaching. The most dominant thing is that facial recognition is used to catch criminals through both cameras and smart glasses for police officers. There is also another approach; for example, when people jaywalk, their photo appears on a LED billboard.

A great solution for medicine is Humanoid robots with software developed by Tencent. They used for making an analysis of customers’ symptoms and to suggest a prescription. What is more, FR can be used to identify rare genetic disorders.

Instead of paying with cash or a credit card at KFC, the transaction is processed after the customer smiles into a self-serve screen and a 3-D camera scans his face to validate identity. Some banks are allowing customers to use their faces instead of bank cards. Isn’t it a great way to withdraw money?

China can totally be considered a leader in facial recognition. All of their projects are already in action, while most of them in other countries are only at the planning stage.

Japan Is Deploying Facial Recognition Across The Board

Demonstrating not less impressive ways of application, Japan tries to keep up with the leader. This country has both some perspectives and already working projects.

  • Subaru. This company has integrated facial recognition cameras into its Forrester brand of SUVs. The new vehicles can predict when a driver is tired or falling asleep and can take action if an accident could happen.
  • 2020 Tokyo Olympics. FR will be used to allow competitors and media to enter scenes. The goal is to boost security by not relying on ID cards, which can be fake.
  • Usage for workflow. AI-equipped cameras will continuously analyze facial expressions of workers to improve their productivity. If they are caught sleeping during the work, they could be blasted with freezing air.
  • Besides, AI-powered cameras are used for catching shoplifters, verifying bank employees and more.

The United Arab Emirates Has Also Big Ambitions

For what purpose and in what spheres the country uses this technology?

  • Airport control. In addition to a standard control, there are other approaches. For example, at the Dubai Airport, a virtual aquarium is fitted with 80 FR cameras that examine people as they walk through the aquarium. Thus, the system will identify a person who has problems with the law, even without his/her knowing.
  • Police cars with facial recognition cameras. Currently, such vehicles are actively tested. As these cars patrol streets, they will be able to identify criminals and wanted vehicles.
  • Criminal Investigations. So far, this feature is under development but is scheduled to go on the move in 2020. The benefits of such technology are transmitting verbal warnings.

A Few Words About The Situation In The U.S.

Of course, the pace of development and application here is slightly moderate, but yet with great potential. For example, more than half of the adults were registered at the police databases as of 2016, and it is quite possible that this number is higher now.

A large number of systems at airports have been long tested with face scanning. The option called Biometric Exit is already in use. It tracks people without visas leaving the country. Moreover, there are some intentions for using AI-equipped cameras at border crossings with Mexico to scan people and vehicles.

In general, it is important to note that development of face recognition in the U.S. (as in many countries as well) is mainly conducted under the government guidance, which differs from the past when innovations were backed by the private realm.

10 Year Challenge And Facial Recognition

One of the most-talked and a little bit hype news which impossible to get around. If you are active on Facebook or Instagram, you’ve probably noticed that recently these platforms are widely popularizing this hashtag. There’s some suggestion that all this was simply planned to train facial recognition algorithms on age progression and age recognition.

Such an opinion was put forward by journalists Katie O’Neill in her article “Facebook’s ’10 Year Challenge’ Is Just a Harmless Meme — Right?” published in Wired magazine. According to her words, the challenge may have been a good basis for training facial recognition programs. Indeed, where else can you find such a huge database of volunteered photos with more or less exact age range, which in addition are united by a single hashtag?

True or not, I think that taking part in this is rather risky for your personal data. First of all, this information can be collected by authoritative corporations and then used in their commercial porpuses.

What To Expect In The Future For Facial Recognition?

The human face has already become a perfect identifier for data transmission, and soon we will see even more opportunities. By dint of it, we can already take various actions like an opening bank account, making online payments, or go through checking control at an airport. In general, we have adjustments to four categories: security and law enforcement, the health sector, marketing and retail, social media platforms. Accordingly, this list will be much bigger in the near future.

As a regular household technology, biometric facial recognition authentication has more than 62 million security cameras in the U.S. alone and millions more in everyone’s pockets. Although it’s hard to predict where facial recognition will be in the coming years, it will certainly become more widespread around the globe, providing more sophisticated features.

Summarizing everything, this technology has a great potentiality to soon become the predominant one. By the predictions of Markets and Markets, a prominent research firm, the all-out market for AI-equipped cameras and software will be worth $7.76 billion in three years’ time.

But at the same time, there is a downside, such as complete control over your data and probability of theft, it is not entirely clear how to protect your personal data.
