The program will commence from March 15 with centres initially in Kharagpur, Bangalore and Kolkata and possibly Hyderabad. The six-month program will teach foundation concepts as well as industrial application of AI with a mix of contact classes and online learning.
“The AI wave has been touted as the fourth industrial revolution and there is a growing perception that it will disrupt almost every job. But it will also create many more. There is an increasing need for skilled AI professionals in order to create and augment AI systems. Around 2 lakh jobs are supposed to be created by 2020 in AI in India,” said IIT-Kgp director, Partha Pratim Chakrabarti.
“The certificate program by IIT Kharagpur is aimed at strengthening India’s talent pool in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence,” added Sudeshna Sarkar, Head of department in Centre for Artificial Intelligence at IIT-Kharagpur.
With the launch of Centre for Artificial Intelligence earlier this year, IIT Kharagpur has taken up the task of skilling engineers in the new technologies in this upcoming domain. The students will be selected competitively from working professionals and senior students either through interview or after written examination screening. In the first batch around 300 to 400 aspirants will be allowed to enroll for the program.
“The course will comprise of 16 one-credit modules and one capstone project. The course modules have been carefully designed to cover mathematical and algorithmic foundations, artificial intelligence fundamentals and several modules on statistical and machine learning methods. The course will also include modules on thematic areas such as natural language processing and computer vision and application use cases. Tools and platforms will be introduced to make the students technologically competent and job ready,” pointed out the IIT-Kgp director.
The classes will be taken by faculty experts from IIT Kharagpur and other reputed academic institutions as well as industry experts across the domain. The courses will have a blend on fundamental theoretical principles as well as hands-on component and industry use cases. Students will have the opportunity to work on live projects. The course modules will be graded based on assignments and exams. A certificate will be awarded based on successful completion of the modules.
“A rigorous AI program for professionals is the need of the hour. This program has been designed by IIT Kharagpur faculty in consultation with industry experts,” said Chakrabarti.
Aneesh Reddy, founder of Capillary technologies which has seed funded the course welcomed the move as he identified the talent scarcity in AI as one of the biggest challenges in its adoption by Indian tech ecosystem.
The course is the first of several certificate courses being launched by IIT Kharagpur to deliver high quality AI training.
