Wow, NameKrea really got launched in 60 days! I never thought that this would be possible, but here it is. The sticky notes that I put on to my wall for planning the next 2 months really proved to be working much better than the agile/scrum/whatever the buzzword thing about project management in the industry right now. All of this happened while I was working full-time. For all of you who is looking for a side gig but don’t know where to start, I would try to guide you as much as I can with this article.
I always wanted to make some sort of Natural Language Processing (NLP) service that is solving a problem. I was not sure what it could be exactly but I just kept playing with several different architectures until I have seen GPT-2 by OpenAI.
For non techies, GPT-2 is a trained Neural Network which is able to generate text on given prompts. You can think of it as autocomplete but much advanced than that. GPT-2 is able to generate whole paragraphs of text on a given subject. Sometimes it is surprisingly accurate and feels like paragraphs are written by an actual person.
Just to give you a taste, when I give the ‘‘How I started my own company while working full time’’ prompt to 774 Million Parameter version to GPT-2 this is what I get in return:
How I started my own company while working full time at Amazon
Its a story of ups and downs
On the very first day, I was working at a software development company that was relatively unknown. It was a small, relatively straight-laced company and we were starting out with a small team. It was hard to convince people that we were serious.
We trusted that our idealist ideas would work, that we could hire highly qualified engineers and our projects would be able to get off the ground. For a time, we were successful. A few of our early projects were great and we hit our initial funding goal, but the rest were uninspiring. We were so far in the red that we had to borrow money from family and friends to keep up.
Then I happened to meet a woman. We became fast friends and I started telling her everything I was working on, and thinking I could convince her to set up a company of my own.
We met through work and opened a second location. The company has since grown to over 150 employees and has developed the best core product in the industry. Soon after opening our second location, we realized that we needed to start recruiting other people to help us run the company.
Okay, that is not exactly well written but in the same time it is crazy how an AI is able to write with such amount of insight and understanding of the context! Funny thing GPT-2 created a story about an Amazon Engineer, which was not included in the prompt.
After fiddling around a lot with this, I started thinking about how to make a product that is so simple to make but still possible to generate income. Even if it is 1 dollar. Even if the product produces 1$, I will count this project as a success.
Identify the Pain: When I go for domain name search, it is a lot of back and forth play between the domain registrar and me. Instead of doing this wouldn’t it be nice that someone already does a research for best available domain names and gives me a menu to choose from? Of course this is my assumption, best way to identify if there is really a problem to solve making a customer survey. For that reason you can use SurveyMonkey it is pretty straightforward for this kind of work.
I don’t have lot of time to spend on customer surveys therefore I will directly go on and use google trends for understanding the need for domain names. If you are running tight on your time resource, Google Trends is your friend!
Type in the keywords that is representing the problem that you are willing to solve and Google Trends is going to give you an amazing trend report for Free about how frequent people are searching your given keywords around the world. In my case, I have searched for the term ‘Domain Search’ got the following results:
