PHOENIX GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY CIGARETTE BOX, 1930
Finally, we have the correct attribution for this item!
This Box is illustrated on Page 165 of Jack Wilson's book,
Phoenix and Consolidated Art Glass 1926-1980.
Wilson writes:
"In 1930, Phoenix celebrated 50 years in business. To commemorate that event it produced a golden anniversary cigarette box in green glass with an acid etched design on the lid. This item is not easily found today."
I have seen a few of these over the years; all have clear glass lids and none that I've seen had any engraving. The Box measures 5-3/4" x 4" x 2-3/4" high, and it weighs 2 pounds!
There are a couple of very small chips on the upper inside edge of the box and there is considerable wear on the base. But as you can see from the photos, it displays very well. All of the corners are intact, and that's where you usually see damage on these boxes .
And, of course, it glows brightly under UV light (all except the top cover, that is!).
