Welcome to the DSC Weekly Digest, a production of Data Science Central. Every week, we pick out the newest and brightest articles on the topic of data … and how it informs our lives, powers our applications, and provides insights into our world.
From the Editor’s Desk
T’is the Season! Christmas, Channukah, Kwanza, Diwali, Yule, Dongzhi, the celebration of the Midwinter Solstice is nearly universal in this world, even if the details differ considerably from culture to culture. North of the equator, it is the shortest day, when night and darkness dominates, For many, it is a chance for gathering together as families and fellowship, though this year, even that brief joy is limited by the pandemic. It is also a time for reflection, about thinking about the past and the future, and how to bring light in various forms back into the world.
Over the course of the next few weeks, I’m hoping to get writers’ thoughts on where we’re going into 2021. The future of work and education, of programming, of data science and AI, of interesting innovations and new ideas. The pandemic has changed things, accelerating changes that likely would have happened about five years from now otherwise. It is very likely that, even as vaccines start making their way to front-line workers (and sadly, to those for whom privilege outweighs compassion), we will not go back to the way things were. Our world is changing, and the challenges we face are likely going to need what we are all working with now and then some.
