Use Case Part 1
Artificial general intelligence, or AGI, is that human intuition component missing in many of today’s AI scenarios.
Why? Why do we care? Why is it important?
Deep learning (DL) neural nets, while incredibly useful for very specific scenarios, are limited to narrowly defined use cases. Self-driving cars are a great illustration. AI can be used to determine how close to follow the car in front, when to slow down, turn, and stop, to some greater or lesser extent. Yet, on the road, with both other human drivers and pedestrians, there are times where human intuition might help inform the situation to arrive at improved decisions.

In AI the problem is defined as “generalization,” and this is where humans excel but deep learning neural nets have historically come up short.
“To the extent that surprising new things happen, it’s not a good thing for deep learning…nearly every (self-driving) car accident involves some sort of unforeseen circumstance, and without the power to generalize, self-driving cars will have to confront each of these scenarios as if for the first time.”
Self-driving cars are headed toward an AI roadblock, The Verge
Imagine a self-driving car encountering an unknown scenario that was informed with human intuition. While human intuition is far from perfect, it is able to react to new scenarios outside of the realm of specifically defined training, unlike deep learning neural nets.
Imagine an AGI application program interface, or API, as a service. As a service means that enterprise and research would be able to consume the service API, make requests and get return values only paying for the time on the service. This would save the consuming entity time and money they would have spent building their own AGI solution.
“…according to Gartner, Inc. AI-derived business value is forecast to reach $3.9 trillion in 2022.”
Within the AI value stream, like the self-driving car use case/scenario, there are many other opportunities where an augmented AI/AGI solution improves the customer and social outcome.
AGI is the next technology frontier.
